The Authority of Christ: Understanding His Power and Lordship

The Authority of Christ: What It Means for Us Today

In today’s world, many people challenge authority in different forms — government, leadership, or even traditions. Yet, one authority stands above every other: the authority of Christ. As believers or those exploring the Christian faith, understanding this authority helps strengthen our trust, our worship, and our daily walk.

“All Authority Has Been Given to Me”

After His resurrection, Jesus declared,

“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” (Matthew 28:18, NASB).

This statement is not symbolic. It tells us that Christ has complete authority over

  • life,
  • death,
  • creation,
  • salvation,
  • and the future.

Because of this, Christians do not follow a distant or uncertain leader. We follow the risen Lord who reigns with power and compassion.

When Was Jesus’ Authority Questioned?

Even during His ministry, religious leaders questioned Jesus’ authority. In Mark 11:28, they asked,

“By what authority are You doing these things?”

They saw His miracles, heard His teaching, and observed His compassion — yet still doubted. Today, many still question whether Christ’s authority applies to modern life.

However, Scripture consistently points to Jesus as the promised Messiah. For example, the Old Testament prophecies fulfilled by Jesus confirm His identity and divine authority. You can read more about this in this study on prophecy fulfillment.

How Christ’s Authority Matters Today

Jesus’ authority is not only historical — it is personal. It shapes how we love our neighbors, handle challenges, and place our hope in eternal life. John 3:16 reminds us of the foundation of our faith:

“For God so loved the world…”

This is the authority of love, not fear.

As we follow Christ, we live under a leader who is faithful, compassionate, and worthy of our trust. When life feels uncertain, we can rest in the One who holds heaven and earth.
