Abraham buys a burial plot for Sarah at Ephron’s field

Death of Sarah – Abraham Buys a Plot

In Genesis 23:17-20, we witness a moment where Abraham buys a burial plot for Sarah. This passage reveals not only Abraham’s respect for Sarah but also his commitment to honoring her in death. The significant event highlights the importance of legacy and the value of securing a place for our loved ones. As we view this passage, we’ll understand how this act of purchase underscores the deeper themes of;

  • faith,
  • respect,
  • and permanence in our relationships with those we cherish.

Abraham Buys a Burial Plot for Sarah

So Ephron’s field, which was in Machpelah, which faced Mamre, the field and cave which was in it, and all the trees which were in the field, that were within all the confines of its border,  were deeded over to Abraham for a possession in the presence of the sons of Heth, before all who went in at the gate of his city.

After this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field at Machpelah facing Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan.

So the field and the cave that is in it,  were deeded over to Abraham for a burial site by the sons of Heth. – Genesis 23:17-20 NASB

The Price of Sarah’s Grave

The grave site cost 400 Shekels of silver. This equals around $111 US dollars at today’s conversion. But, during the time of Abraham this was a very high price for land.

Ephron offered to “give” Abraham the field and cave to bury Sarah. However, he mentioned how much he wanted for it. So, Abraham paid Ephron’s price because he was a foreigner. Abraham felt compelled to pay the price to ensure a legitimate and undisputed ownership of the burial site. As a foreigner, he wanted to avoid any future conflicts or claims over the land. By paying the full price, he secured a clear and honorable transaction.

The Promised Land

Abraham knew that this was the land God had promised him. But, he did not want to take anything away from the Hittites. So, he offered to bargain with them, agreeing to pay a fair price for any land they would allow Abraham to purchase.

Not much more to say about this passage except this includes a major event in Abraham’s life. His beloved Sarah is gone. Abraham is now alone — except for his relationship with God. God shapes his life from this time forward.
