The Temptation of Joseph in Egypt – A Genesis Bible Lesson
While serving in the house of Potiphar in Egypt, Joseph faced one of the greatest tests of his faith. The temptation of Joseph in Egypt with Potiphar’s wife shows us the meaning of integrity. This Scripture reading reveals powerful truths about obedience, integrity, and trusting God in difficult circumstances.
“Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance. It came about after these events that his master’s wife looked with desire at Joseph, and she said, ‘Lie with me.’ But he refused…”
— Genesis 39:6–8 NASB
Joseph was a young man far from home, working hard and earning the respect of his Egyptian master, Potiphar. But when temptation appeared in the form of Potiphar’s wife, he had to make a choice that would change the course of his life.
Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife
Potiphar’s wife was persistent. She tried every day to seduce Joseph, but he continued to resist her advances. Despite being alone and far from his family, Joseph stood firm in his commitment to God.
He told her clearly that giving in would be a sin against both Potiphar and, more importantly, against God Himself. That deep spiritual conviction helped him stay strong even when no one else was watching.
“How then could I do this great evil and sin against God?”
— Genesis 39:9
Overcoming the Temptation of Sin
Temptation often comes when we least expect it—and it can be powerful. But Joseph’s story reminds us that spiritual strength doesn’t come from willpower alone. It comes from a close relationship with God.
Like Joseph, we may face moments where we feel pressured to compromise our values. When that happens, remember his example: flee from temptation and hold firmly to what is right.
Strength Through God
Joseph didn’t avoid temptation because he was stronger than anyone else. He avoided it because his heart belonged to God. He understood that sin isn’t just breaking a rule—it’s breaking God’s heart.
When we face our own “Potiphar’s wife” moments, prayer and faith can give us the courage to stand firm. God provides the strength we need when we rely on Him.
What Happened to Potiphar’s Wife After She Accused Joseph?
When Joseph ran from her, leaving his garment behind, Potiphar’s wife used it as false evidence. She accused Joseph of wrongdoing, and Potiphar believed her. As a result, Joseph was thrown into prison—even though he was innocent.
“When his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, ‘This is what your slave did to me,’ his anger burned. So Joseph’s master took him and put him into the prison…”
— Genesis 39:19–20
We’re not told exactly what became of Potiphar’s wife after this, but the story focuses instead on how God continued to bless Joseph even in prison. His integrity remained intact, and God’s favor never left him.
Lessons from Joseph’s Example
- Stay faithful even when no one else is watching.
- Run from temptation instead of reasoning with it.
- Trust God’s plan even when circumstances seem unfair.
Joseph’s faith and obedience led to greater blessings later in his life. This story is a reminder that God honors those who honor Him, even when the road gets difficult.
Are We Strong Like Joseph?
We’ve all faced temptation and fallen short many times. But through prayer and dependence on God, we can find the same strength Joseph had. As the old hymn says, “Be strong in the Lord.”
If you’re facing your own challenges, remember that God can help you overcome anything. Let’s pray for that strength every day.
