The phrase comes from a parable Jesus told in the Gospel of Matthew. It’s not just a statement—it’s an invitation to reflect on how we respond to God’s call.
In Matthew 22, Jesus describes a king who prepares a wedding banquet for his son. He sends out invitations, but many people ignore them or make excuses.
“For many are called, but few are chosen.” (Matthew 22:14)
This simple verse reminds us that while God invites everyone, not everyone accepts that invitation in a genuine way.
The Parable of the Wedding Banquet
A Generous Invitation
The parable (story) resides in two parts:
- The king represents God,
- and the wedding banquet symbolizes the kingdom of heaven.
The invitation goes out widely.
“Tell those who are invited, ‘See, I have prepared my dinner… everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’” (Matthew 22:4)
This shows God’s heart. He wants all people to come to Him. He provides an open invitation, full of grace.
Excuses and Rejection
However, many people in the parable ignore the invitation. Regretfully, they choose daily life over responding to the king.
“But they paid no attention and went off—one to his field, another to his business.” (Matthew 22:5)
This reflects how easily people (us included) become distracted. Work, responsibilities, and personal interests can pull us away from God.

At the end of the parable, even someone who accepts the invitation is removed because he is not properly dressed.

Will we ignore Him? Delay? Or fully accept His invitation? Following Christ means more than hearing His message. It means living it out daily.
Chosen Through Faith
Being “chosen” is not about exclusivity. It reflects those who truly accept God’s invitation and are transformed by it.
When we place our faith in Christ, He changes us from the inside out.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
This separates the “chosen.” It’s not perfection—it’s a surrendered heart. After all grace saves us, not works. And, we will never be “good enough” which is why we need Christ.
A Simple Reflection
“Many are called, but few are chosen” is not meant to discourage us. It’s meant to wake us up. God is calling. The question is: how will we respond?
