Ever feel like you’re saying all the right things, but your heart is headed in another direction? You’re not alone. Many of us want to follow Christ, yet our actions sometimes tell a different story. Today’s Matthew Bible lesson invites us to look honestly at ourselves and rediscover what real obedience looks like.
The Parable of the Two Sons and Our Everyday Faith
In Matthew 21, Jesus shares a simple but powerful story about two sons. On the surface, it’s easy to read. But when we dig a little deeper, it reveals a truth we all wrestle with—how easy it is to pretend to follow Christ while quietly charting our own path.
“A man had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ The son answered, ‘I will not,’ but later changed his mind and went.” – Matthew 21:28–29
The second son politely said, “I will, sir,” but he never followed through. Jesus asked which son did the will of the father. The answer was obvious—the one whose actions matched his obedience, not just his words.
The Rest of the Parable of the Two Sons Story
Jesus wasn’t simply telling a family story. He directed this message to the chief priests and elders—religious leaders who looked obedient outwardly but resisted God’s call at heart.
“Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you.” – Matthew 21:31
Those who were considered “far from God” actually responded to the message of repentance, while the religious leaders only talked about righteousness. This is a reminder for us today: following Christ is a daily choice, not just a statement of belief.
How This Applies to Us Today
We all have moments when we drift. Sometimes we say “yes” to God but quietly live like the second son—choosing comfort, pride, or distractions instead of obedience. Other times, we may start like the first son—hesitant or resistant—yet God draws us back, and we follow Him with sincerity. This is grace at work.
Remember, Jesus will return and we need to be prepared. You can read more about it at this post or restore your perspective with this encouraging message about faith.
Walking the Path of Real Obedience
Living out Jesus’ message means aligning our actions with our faith. And the good news? God meets us with patience and guidance. The parable of the two sons shows us that a changed heart is far more valuable to Him than empty words.
“For this is love for God: to keep His commands.” – 1 John 5:3
As we reflect on this Matthew Bible lesson, let’s be honest with ourselves. Are we walking in the direction we say we’re going? Or is God gently calling us back to the vineyard—to the path of obedience, purpose, and love?
Wherever you are today, God invites you to turn toward Him and take that next faithful step.
In Christ,
Bob
