When life heats up, it’s easy to ask, “Where is God?” The truth in this lyric — “Hold on, our God will show up; and take us through the fire again” — is rooted in Scripture and in stories of deliverance that encourage us today.
Hold On, Our God Will Show Up When the Flames Feel Too Hot
We all face moments that feel like walking through fire: sudden loss, health scares, broken relationships, or dreams gone wrong. In those times, fear whispers that God must be far away. However, the Bible gives a different, bracing message. God does not abandon his people in the flames. Instead, he meets them there.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego: A Bold Example
“Then the king was astonished and rose up in haste. He said to his counselors, ‘Did we not throw three men bound into the fire?’ …
‘Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.’” — Daniel 3:24, 25
Here, God didn’t prevent the furnace. Rather, he stepped into it. The three came out untouched. That scene shows God’s presence with the faithful, not always the removal of trouble but the promise of companionship and rescue.
Biblical Promises That Back the Lyric
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you.
When you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.” — Isaiah 43:2
“Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.” — Psalm 34:19
“These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes—may be found to result in praise, glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” — 1 Peter 1:7
What This Means for You and Me
First, holding on is an act of faith. Second, trials often refine us. Therefore, when the lyric says, “our God will show up,” it points to a God who is present and purposeful. He walks with us, protects when possible, and uses hardship to shape us into Christlike people.
So if you are in a furnace season today, remember: God’s presence is the greater promise. Hold on. He has shown up before, and he will show up again.
In Christ,
Bob
