Moses and the Burning Bush: What Excuses Do We Give When God Calls?
“Then the LORD said to him, ‘Who has made man’s mouth? … Now then go, and I, even I, will be with your mouth, and teach you what you are to say.’” — Exodus 4:11-12 (NASB)
When Moses encountered the burning bush, it was more than a miracle—it was a moment of calling. God had a plan for Moses to lead His people out of Egypt, but Moses hesitated. Like many of us today, he began offering excuses for why he wasn’t the right person for the job.
The Moses and the Burning Bush image above reminds us that we often do the same. God calls us to serve, to lead, or to share His Word—but fear, doubt, and self-criticism often get in the way.
What Are the 5 Excuses of Moses?
Moses gave five reasons why he couldn’t do what God asked (Exodus 3–4):
- “Who am I?” — He felt unworthy (Exodus 3:11).
- “What if they ask who sent me?” — He doubted his authority (Exodus 3:13).
- “What if they don’t believe me?” — He feared rejection (Exodus 4:1).
- “I am slow of speech.” — He felt inadequate (Exodus 4:10).
- “Please send someone else.” — He resisted the call (Exodus 4:13).
Sound familiar? We may not face a burning bush, but we face similar moments when God nudges our hearts—calling us to teach, volunteer, comfort someone, or share the Gospel.
How This Applies Today
Just as Moses doubted his ability, we often underestimate the talents and spiritual gifts God has already placed in us. Whether your gift is speaking, serving, or creating, God’s call is not about your strength—it’s about His.
1 Peter 4:10 says,
“As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.”
We might tell ourselves we’re too busy, too old, or too inexperienced. But God promises to equip us for the work He gives us. Our part is obedience—trusting that He will provide the rest.
Moving From Excuses to Action
Instead of asking “Why me?”, try asking “Why not me?” God often calls ordinary people to do extraordinary things. Moses’ story reminds us that God’s power is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9 NASB).
So, the next time you sense that gentle nudge to serve, teach, or encourage someone—don’t make excuses. Say “yes,” and watch God work through you.
