What Is Heaven Really Like? Jesus Describes the Kingdom of Heaven

Many people wonder: What is Heaven really like? It’s a question that has intrigued believers for centuries. While we won’t know every detail until we get there, Jesus gave us some amazing insights through His parables. Learn what Jesus said about Heaven in this Matthew Bible lesson. Find how He used simple, relatable stories to paint a picture of eternal life with God.

These short parables about:

  • hidden treasure,
  • a pearl of great value,
  • and a fishing net

help us understand how powerful the kingdom of heaven truly is. Each one contains a spiritual truth that still speaks to us today. Let’s get started!

Jesus Describes Heaven Through Parables

“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”Matthew 13:44 NASB

A Costly Pearl

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.”Matthew 13:45-46 NASB

The Parable of the Fishing Net

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet cast into the sea, and gathering fish of every kind; and when it was filled, they drew it up on the beach; and they sat down and gathered the good fish into containers, but the bad they threw away.”Matthew 13:47-48 NASB

Why Did Jesus Use Parables?

Jesus spoke in parables to help people understand deep spiritual truths in a way that was down-to-earth and relatable. People of His time understood things like:

  • farming,
  • fishing,
  • and treasure-hunting.

So when Jesus described Heaven in these ways, His message hit home.

A Message Revealed Over Time

Jesus didn’t just teach facts—He revealed mysteries. As He says in Matthew 13:35:

“I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.” – NIV

What Jesus Said About Heaven

In these parables, Jesus makes one thing clear: the kingdom of heaven is worth everything. It’s the greatest treasure we could ever find. Just like the man who found the pearl of great value, we should be willing to give up whatever holds us back from a relationship with Christ.

That doesn’t mean we have to literally sell all we own. But we’re called to prioritize Heaven—and our walk with Christ—above all else.

The Dragnet Parable: A Wake-Up Call

This story about the dragnet isn’t just about fish—it’s about eternity. Jesus explains that one day, there will be a final judgment. God will separate those who belong to Him from those who don’t.

It’s a sobering truth, but an important one. None of us are saved by being “good enough.” No, we’re saved because of what God did through Jesus. As it says in this powerful post about the cross, Jesus paid the price. He went to the cross so we could be among the “good fish” gathered into His eternal kingdom.
