  • someone just starting to explore the faith,
  • or someone who wants a better understanding of the New Testament,

you’ve probably had some questions along the way. In this article, we’ll gaze at 12 of the most common New Testament questions. Hopefully, this short message will provide simple, straightforward answers based on Scripture.

1. What is the New Testament?

The New Testament is the second part of the Christian Bible, following the Old Testament. It contains 27 books, including the four Gospels:

  • Matthew,
  • Mark,
  • Luke,
  • and John.

These books tell the story of Jesus Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. Also, it illustrates the Acts of the Apostles, who formed the early church’s history. And finally, the New Testament contains letters written by early Christian leaders like,

  • Paul,
  • Peter,
  • and James,

offering teachings and advice to churches and individuals.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”2 Corinthians 5:17

2. Why Did Jesus Have to Die on the Cross?

One big question often asked is; “Why did Jesus have to die? Simply put, the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross was part of God’s plan for salvation. His sacrifice took the punishment for sin that we deserved. He made it possible for us (everyone) to be reconciled with God.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” — Romans 6:23

3. What Does it Mean to Be “Born Again”?

Being “born again” refers to a spiritual rebirth, where a person places their faith in Jesus Christ and receives the Holy Spirit, starting a new life in Christ. Jesus explained this to Nicodemus in John 3:3, where He said,

“Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.’” — John 3:3

4. What Are the Gospels, and Why Are There Four?

The four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) each tell the story of Jesus from a slightly different perspective. While they have many similarities, each Gospel highlights unique aspects of His life, teachings, and miracles, giving us a more complete picture of who Jesus is.

“Each of the four Gospels presents a different perspective, but all tell the story of Jesus’ life and message of salvation.” — Matthew 28:19-20

5. What Is the Kingdom of God?

The “Kingdom of God” refers to God’s reign and rule over all creation. While Jesus’ message included the promise of a future kingdom, He also taught that God’s kingdom is already at work in the world. This comes about through His followers–and the power of the Holy Spirit.

“The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” — Mark 1:15

6. What Is the Role of the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is God’s presence active in the world today. He empowers believers to live out their faith, comforts them, and helps guide them in their relationship with God. The Holy Spirit also works to convict people of their sin and lead them to Christ. The “Advocate” mentioned below means that Jesus speaks in our defense. The Holy Spirit is our Advocate and our helper.

“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” — John 14:26

7. How Can I Be Saved?

Salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ. It is not based on good works or personal achievements but on accepting that Jesus died for our sins and was resurrected. By believing in Him, people are forgiven and receive eternal life.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” — Ephesians 2:8-9

8. What Are the Fruits of the Spirit?

The “fruits of the Spirit” are nine virtues that show evidence of the Holy Spirit’s presence in a person’s life. They are:

  1. love,
  2. joy,
  3. peace,
  4. forbearance,
  5. kindness,
  6. goodness,
  7. faithfulness,
  8. gentleness,
  9. and self-control.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” — Galatians 5:22-23

9. Why Do Christians Baptize?

Contrary to what many believe, baptism does not save anyone. The act shows an outward sign of an inward change. Through baptism, new Christians publicly declare their faith in Jesus Christ. This symbolizes their death to sin and new life in Him. It’s a key step of obedience for a believer.

“for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized [b]with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” — Acts 1:5

10. What Is the Great Commission?

Jesus gave the Great Commission command to His disciples to go out and share the good news of the gospel. It’s about spreading the message of salvation and making disciples of all nations.

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” — Matthew 28:19

11. What Does it Mean to Love Your Neighbor?

Loving your neighbor is at the heart of Jesus’ teachings. It means showing kindness, compassion, and respect to others, no matter who they are or what they believe. Jesus emphasized that loving others is one of the greatest commandments. Does this mean that Christians must agree with others at all costs? Not at all. But, we are to pray for those who need Christ and love them just the same. This is easy to say but very difficult to practice. Let’s work on it!

“Love your neighbor as yourself.” — Mark 12:31

12. What Will Happen at the End of the World?

Okay, I’m not going to attempt to explain the Book of Revelation here. But, the New Testament speaks of a time when Jesus will return to judge the living and the dead. Those who have accepted Him will be rewarded with eternal life. But those who have rejected Him will face separation from God. This is often referred to as the “Second Coming” of Christ. Do we know the exact time? No. But, Jesus proclaimed that we should “remain watchful“. And, we should remain faithful as well.

“For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.” — Matthew 16:27
