Today, find how the fishermen followed Jesus in Matthew 4:18-22. When Jesus called out, “Follow me,” Simon (also known as Peter), Andrew, James, and John immediately left their nets and followed Him. This event marks the beginning of Jesus’ ministry and the calling of His first disciples. Read this Bible study lesson to learn more about these fishermen who became Christ’s first followers. And, find what their response teaches us today.
“Follow Me” – Fishermen Follow Jesus – How Jesus Chose His Disciples
Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.
And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. – Matthew 4:18-20 NASB
The Simple Words – “Follow Me.”
Jesus told Peter and Andrew to leave their fishing business and become ‘fishers of men,’ to help others find God.
Jesus was calling them away from their productive trades to be productive spiritually.
Follow by Faith
These first disciples obeyed. This could be a lesson about faith and obedience to God as it is covered many times in Scripture. Today, I want to focus on the instruction the story gives us as Christians.
What Should Christians Do?
We all need to “fish for souls” just like Andrew and the other disciples.
Like the fisherman who pulls fish into his boat with nets, we will be able to draw people to Jesus if we practice Christ’s teachings. Using these examples and the power of the Holy Spirit, we can share the gospel.
Why Did They Follow Jesus?
They (Peter & Andrew) were not in a hypnotic trance when they followed. However, they became convinced that following Christ would change their lives forever.
But what about us? Jesus is always ready and willing to change our lives too! All we need to do is open our minds and hearts to His will guide us.
We All Need Christ
As I’ve said many times, I am neither a pastor nor a biblical scholar. But neither were the fishermen. Just as they were, I’m a person who makes mistakes. I need God to help me through life. Even so, I can share how I am forgiven through Christ’s love. With that said, I pray that, if you haven’t already, you will receive Christ and experience the same joy that I have received by accepting Him as my personal Savior. Let’s become “fishers of men” (people).
Love in Christ
