Are we scientists or believers? First, scientists always look for signs and evidence. But, Christians know faith is lost when they have to “prove God“.
So, let’s look at signs from Jesus vs faith in our Bible study for today.
The Pharisees continuously tried to catch Jesus in a falsehood by asking for signs and on the spot miracles.
But, Christ made it clear that He wants us to believe in Him by faith, and not by deeds.
The Pharisees tested Jesus to get physical proof of His miracles through signs.
In reality, they wanted to trick Christ and prove Him wrong.
How about us? Do we look for a sign from Jesus or do we trust our faith?
They Need Signs from Jesus – Bible Study Lesson from Mark 8:11-13
The Pharisees came out and began to argue with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, to test Him.
Sighing deeply in His spirit, He said, “Why does this generation seek for a sign?
Truly I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.”
Leaving them, He again embarked and went away to the other side. – Mark 8:11-13 NASB
Jesus and miracles and signs…
The Pharisees wanted a physical explanation of Jesus’ power. They had already dismissed His previous miracles as being done by tricks, luck or even worse, by evil spirits.
Now, they wanted a Godly sign from heaven. But, Jesus knew this would not convince them any more than all the other miracles He performed.
Truthfully, the Pharisees were so determined to prove Christ wrong that nothing would have convinced them.
Do We Still See Miracles Today?
Okay, I know the subject of miracles today is a touchy subject among Biblical scholars. And, I surely don’t want to start a theological debate.
Yes, many believe that miracles disappeared when the last disciples died.
And, the point is well-taken as we don’t see the types of miracles we experienced in Exodus.
With that said, I still believe that miracles, brought about as an answer to prayer from God, still happen today.
But, we need to focus more on our faith, instead of searching for physical evidence of God’s existence.
Who Are We? Followers of Christ – Or Pharisees?
The question I have for myself, and for you is;
“Are we more like the followers of Christ or more like the Pharisees in our (lack of) faith?“
If we answer honestly, it seems we are more like the Pharisees than other figures in the Bible.
We sometimes look for signs and proof we can..
- see
- hear
- and touch
instead of depending on our faith in God. This is only human.
Faith First – Then Miracles
If we have faith, and get involved with doing what Christ asked us to do, maybe we will see more miracles in our lives
– just as the followers did when Jesus walked the earth.
Let us pray and ask God to help us trust Him.
And, let’s show more faith in Him instead of searching for physical signs from heaven.
